Extension for homeless families on military base

Extension for homeless families on military base
Last Updated: Jul 11 2001 12:23 PM EDT

The federal minister in charge of dealing with Canada's homeless has confirmed that 15 families will be allowed to stay at CFB Rockcliffe for another year.

The city originally agreed to move the families, the houses, or both by the end of July.
Claudette Bradshaw says she plans to meet with city officials in the coming weeks to iron out the details.

Bradshaw says it was partly due to efforts of the military families living on the base that the homeless families were allowed to stay.

Forty-four families moved into the vacant housing last December. They had been facing an eviction date of July 31.

The Department of National Defence offered the vacant houses to help alleviate Ottawa's housing problem.

The 15 families who have been unable to find alternate housing will now be able to live on the base until July 2002.

City councillor Alex Munter says the extension will give Ottawa "more time to try to negotiate a permanent use … of land at that location."

The city originally agreed to move the families, the houses, or both by the end of July.

5 Assoro Crescent; cold draft, increasing heating bill.

Re:       5 Assoro Crescent; cold draft, increasing heating bill.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:

1/24/2005 11:39 AM, as per our telephone conversation,  I have been a tenant at 5 Assoro Crescent, since 2003.  For the past three winters, I have endured a cold, drafty house that is costly to heat.  Every year I have addressed this issue with your office and received a minimal solution, while waiting for new siding. In the mean time I request, that your organization inspect the house and authorize more insulation and foam.

On inspection of the crawl space under the house, you will find gapes and cracks around the foundation and under the main floors, incomplete insulation.  In the kitchen, east wall has a very large draft that is felt on the floor, in the cupboards and runs up the wall the second story bedrooms. On very cold days, the lower cupboards develop frost.  The furnace is running constantly, trying to compensate for the heat loss.  The drafty conditions are a result of, a poor thermal envelope, or an insulated, air- resistant boundary between conditioned inside air and outside air.” This is translated into cold feet and hands, increased heating cost and extra wear and tear on the furnace.

I have always been pleased with your service and I trust that you will review this situation with haste and come to a mutual, satisfactory solution.

Sincerely,
